“SEE THE LIGHT” Awesome Kitchen Apparatus Giveaway!!!

Brought to you by EZ-RED and MYHUNGRYTUM…

So I have a problem in my kitchen.  Lighting is always an issue for me.  My hood lights don’t work (boo) and I have small windows that are blocked by a tree outside so I don’t get natural light.  When I am working on a detailed task, I sometimes would like a bit more direct focused white light.  What to do?

Many of you have already “met” my cousin Luke.  I have also plugged his company EZ-RED who have sponsored several dishes for the journey.  EZ-RED makes tools and lighting for the automotive trade.  When I mentioned my lighting issue to Luke recently, he asked what would be the ideal solution.  I said, a lighting system that is portable, can clip onto cabinets, hoods and that has enough high power white light to illuminate an area where I am working.

Luke smiled and proceeded to tell me that the perfect lighting system was in fact already in existence and that his company designed them!!  Furthermore he was going to send me one to try out!  The next time Luke came to visit, he came bearing gifts including a plastic case which he handed to me.  I opened it up and proceeded to stare in awe at the perfect solution to my lighting issue.

What a perfect setup!!  Let me explain the features:  Heavy duty plastic originally intended for the automotive industry, this light is designed to hold up to impacts, dropping etc.  It can clip on to anything using a gator mouth clamp and a hook for varied scenarios.  It is magnetized to stick to metal surfaces (such as a faulty range hood) and has a detachable gooseneck for angling the light.  20 LED BULBS create a strong white light!  Best of all, it is rechargeable!  Every kitchen needs one!  It works great on the outdoor grill for grilling after sunset as well.   It also could double as emergency lighting for power outages etc.

Luke brought me two of them and I would like to offer one lucky reader a chance to “SEE THE LIGHT”.

Multipurpose Utility Light from EZ RED

Awww, what an awesome contest. Love knives. But sadly I live north to the US. Still, I’ll retweet the message so my eligible followers can participate! 🙂

My husband always tells me that you need ‘the right tool for the right job’ . Well, that shiny little utility knife looks like just the ticket for chopping a mound of onions and mushrooms and gliding through a few pounds of sirloin tips to make wonderfully uniform strips of bite-sized morsels for a gigantic pan of satiny, gravy-gooey sirloin tips. Gosh, I bet it would even make short order of salad fixin’s so that a big old green salad could be waiting on the sideboard by the time my husband and his poker pals are ready to break for the tradition Poker Night Beef and Brews the next time we host! I might stop short of brandishing said utility knife in front of the guys and crowing about ‘the right tool for the job’ … that might be a bit much. What do you think?

As a child some of my fondest memories were of my father in the kitchen preparing dinner. He would magically juggle the act of cooking, simmering, cutting, and dicing seemingly random ingredients to produce some of the most fantastic and delectable meals for our family and friends. He would often assign me small tasks such as peeling the onions or slicing carrots to help out. These memories have inspired me to begin culinary attempts of my own.
Now that I finally have a new family and home of my own I am trying to build a respectable collection of kitchen utensils (I received a good set of pots and pans for a wedding present), but still need to gather the all-important knife set. I would love a quality knife like this to assist me in creating an act of magic and wonder for my loved ones, especially my dad and, one day, my own child.

My maternal grandma is the person who taught the women in the house that cooking is NOT a “chore” but a “culinary experience”. Like any traditional Chinese family, our festivities & holidays revolve around food & cooking. My grandma passed on her magical culinary skills to my mother, and now that she is visiting from Australia, and staying with me, we are spending a lot of time cooking together enjoying mother daughter bonding time.

I took her window shopping at Williams Sonoma and Sur La Table and when she saw the Shun knives, you should’ve seen her face, she was drooling like a puppy at a butcher shop! She explained to me that Shun knives are the “Rolls Royce” of the knife world. I almost had to wipe the drool off her face.

I may not be able to get her a Rolls Royce, but I certainly would love to get her the Rolls Royce of knives as a “thank you” for having me as her daughter and that she is one amazing mother.

I would make great use of this beautiful knife cutting and chopping fillings for our aebleskiver! You may ask, why a Japanese knife for Danish pastry? Actually, we were inspired by Japanese takoyaki pans when we designed our aebleskiver pan. We’ve actually created really interesting aebleskiver flavors because of the influence of takoyaki; adding different bouillons, teas, and coffee to the batter, so delicious! I’d be happy to send you photos of the knife in action at our local farmers market where we serve up hundreds of aebleskiver each weekend. It will definitely get a work out!
Thanks for such a great blog, I love traveling through food. I think my favorite so far is the Cambodian recipe. Can you tell I’m on a Asian cuisine kick?

Hi, Eric. What a fun contest and great prize.

This would be a great knife for my mother in Chicago. Whenver I visit, I cannot find any sharp knives for cooking. As I blogged recently, her favourite thing to make for dinner is “reservations”, so it might encourage her to do more at home. I do like to be able to cook when I am visiting her, too.

The most important tool in any kitchen is arguably a high-quality knife, like this one. So this would be a great present for my mother. Possibly I could qualify under your rules of US residency (well, I am still a US citizen, and our island is below the 49th parallel, to boot – which rhymes with the Canadian pronunciation of “about” – and this knife will go to her in Chicago!).

Poutine is the recipe I have to consider my favourite: it is the first time I have seen it described as the national dish of Canada! Vive la poutine!!

I love the premise for your blog. Keep up your great international project.

    Thanks,

    Dan

Well it all started when I realized that I thoroughly enjoy cooking and entertaining. To me there is nothing better than prepping a great meal and serving it up to some great friends. I have spent the last three years learning how to prep and serve many dishes that have gotten some great reviews. Believe it or not I have even begun to take requests from my friends (which aren’t always great haha).
Ok, sorry I am getting away from the point, recently I have begun to work on my knife skills but haven’t really had the chance to get that perfect set of knives. It seems to me that this would be the perfect start to the perfect set and would definitely have me on my way. Now all I have to do is perfect the skills that go with the knife and will be oohing and ahhing my friends many times over.

    Hi My Hungry Tum Friends:

This is my story. 15 years ago when I first started living by myself my mom bought me a set of silverware and a woodblock with knifes. She probably expended 30 dollars in all and they were great for a single woman in school. 3 year later I got married and as my hubby and I started with out anything we just continue using my knifes.
Over the last 12 years a lot of things had happened, we became parents and moved several times. We end up in Charlotte a few years ago, and we love it. We have had ups and downs that had led us deciding of spending our money in other urgen, and some times no so urgent matters and as hard as it may be to believe it we still use my set of knifes from 15 years ago. I lost a couple and replaced one with a bread knife, but it is still the same old woodblock. And I am afraid to say but we also haven’t change the silverware. I would love to have a nice knife. Maybe it will be the beginning to a new stage in my kitchen, and who knows, maybe of my life…

What we do is what defines us…the jobs we take on, our visions, not the challenges that we “face” because we have no choice but to face them…but the challenges we take on…because those are the ones that say something about our character…I applaud you for taking on the challenge of this project…it will be something not only will you be forever proud of, but will at some point serve as an inspiration to those around you who are living it with you…congratulations…

    Oh,yeah, the knife….I want it because it’s a kick ass knife 🙂

Good food is in the mouth of the eater which is why I like your recipe for Qabili Pilau. You might think that I picked that one because it was the first one on the list but it was actually the 5th recipe I read. I like the fact that it is simple but will surprise you with flavor. I am intrigued by its ability to take me to another level.

Now to the knife, what more can I say but it is a beautiful instrument. I know most won’t refer to a knife as beautiful but I will. The tools you use can only enhance the ability of its user. Yes I know that I can cook great dishes with the tools I already have and I must say I do, but I’m just going to say it, darn it I want to win this knife. :~)

Many here are far more deserving of this knife than I. ……(the central portion of this was edited for content issues (ahem). Trust me you all want that!! I allowed the first and last sentences so that you would understand the next entry. That is all I will say about that…Sincerely Eric Ackerson :))……….. I loved the Cambodian dish and I want the damn knife. Great job on the blog. You RULE!

Wow, Mr. Alexander is a genius. I am sure that had he more than 150 words to work with he would have pointed out that many of the other essays (including the Asian woman’s beautifully written entry) exceed the 150 word maximum as per your rules. Mr. Alexander must have known, “the knife cuts both ways” and kept that fact to himself to keep within the word limit. I applaud Mr. Alexander for his sharp eye, and believe he should have a sharp knife to match. Love you Eric. Love the blog, love the Latkes. Though some may argue that this has been done before I have to say-I loved Mrs. Childs but the other Julia drove me to drink! You are a great writer and can write your own damn book! And I will help you with the movie if you treat me real knife. (sorry for my lisp)

I must admit, I have done nothing to deserve this gorgeous knife. I haven’t attended Johnson and Wales – though I live less than 4 blocks away. I am ashamed to admit I use a slap chop when I’m short on time. (Linguini, bikini.) But I would like to give this fine instrument to a truly deserving culinary co-worker of mine, a small blind girl who makes rum cakes, chocolate chip cookies (on site) chocolate mousse cakes and many other fine delectables that she shares freely with all of us, despite the fact that she makes far less money than her husband – though her work is far superior. Thank you for making our lives richer by sharing this delicious journey around the world – and thank you especially for the Cambodian dish. I imagine it tastes as great as it looks.

I actually know that blind girl. She cut her hand on a much cheaper, duller knife recently and it cost the family 700 bucks in medical bills. I suggest Mr. Langteaux keep the gorgeous knife and give his co-worker a braille book on cooking safety. Love your writing, love the Aussie Meat Pie – Your efforts bloggle the mind, Eric. Keep up the great work Mate!

PS – your rules say nothing about multiple entries! Now I get the reason for all the damn fine print!!

  16. March 13, 2010 12:06 am

The contest is now officially closed! No further entries will be accepted. To all who participated, thank you!!!

The winner will be chosen by my wife. I will be blocking out all personal information before she reads them in order to keep it fair. THe winner will be her favorite essay. I can honestly say that it will be tough.

The winner will be notified by email on Monday March 15th by 12:00 noon EST. Enjoy your weekend and cook something exotic….
